Installation

To successfully install TrueCrypt, you must have administrator privileges.

  1. Download the latest version of TrueCrypt from http://www.truecrypt.org/downloads.

  2. Double-click on the downloaded file. Choose an installation path when asked for and finish the installation.

Use

Create a new volume

In order to use TrueCrypt, you need to create a new encrypted volume.

  1. Start TrueCrypt (usually from Start -> All Programms -> TrueCrypt).

  2. In the main window, select "Create Volume".
  3. Choose "Create an encrypted file container". (If you need another volume type, please ask your sysadmin how to proceed).
  4. Choose whether you want to hide the new volume or not. In most cases, it should not be necessary to hide the volume, so you can accept the default and continue.
  5. Choose a location and a name for the file containing your volume.
  6. Choose how to encrypt your volume. In most cases, the default settings should be fine.
  7. Now, you need to specify how much space your volume should contain. Since it is not possible to enlarge an existing volume, you should carefully choose your volumes size.
  8. Now, you need to enter your password. Again, choose your password wisely. If you forget it, you are no longer able to access your files. However, if you choose a password that is too simple, the data on your volume are less secure than with a more complicated password.
  9. Finally, choose with what filesystem your volume should be formatted. In generall, the default settings are ok.
  10. Select "Format" to create your volume. When its created, exit the wizard to use your volume.
